Construction work at Magdeburg Central Station will lead to an 18-hour total closure next week with far-reaching effects on train services. Deutsche Bahn has announced all-day detour and longer journey times between Braunschweig and Leipzig for December 11 and 12. The reason is a software change for new systems in the signal box, as the railroad announced.
In long-distance services, the two IC lines from Stuttgart via Hanover to Dresden (IC 55) and from Norddeich Mole via Hanover to Leipzig (IC 56) are affected. In addition to Magdeburg Central Station, several other stops will be canceled, including Braunschweig Central Station, Köthen and Halle (Saale) Central Station.
Where the journey time will be extended
The trains will instead stop in Magdeburg-Neustadt, Dessau Hauptbahnhof and Bitterfeld (IC 55) or Leipzig/Halle Airport (IC 56). The journey time will be extended by 15 to 20 minutes for the IC 55 and 30 to 40 minutes for the IC 56.
Regional services on affected sections of the route will be replaced by buses. The restrictions are particularly severe from Thursday (11.12.) 10.00 a.m. to Friday (12.12.) 4.00 a.m.: During this period, no trains will call at Magdeburg Central Station. A total of 14 regional transport lines are affected.
