Volunteer lifeguards keep watch at many swimming spots in the country. However, they cannot always prevent fatal accidents.

In the first seven months of the year, seven people lost their lives in swimming accidents in Saxony. According to the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG), four of the victims were between 61 and 70 years old. Most of them died in the month of March.

In the same period last year, the DLRG recorded eight deaths by drowning in Saxony. The number of swimming fatalities had risen to 16 by the end of the year. According to the DLRG, 236 people died in accidents nationwide in the first seven months of the current year, 84 percent of whom were men. Every fourth person who drowned was older than 70, it said.
