The expansion of wind power is progressing nationwide. However, Saxony's share is not particularly large.

Seven new wind turbines went into operation in Saxony in the first half of the year. This means that the Free State contributed 1.7 percent to the nationwide expansion of onshore wind power, according to the German Wind Energy Association.

A total of 409 new wind turbines with a total output of 2.2 gigawatts were connected to the grid across Germany - two thirds more than in the first half of 2024. There are now almost 29,000 wind turbines in operation in Germany - 856 of which are located in the Free State of Saxony.

The seven new wind turbines in Saxony have an output of 36.7 megawatts, according to the association. At the same time, three old turbines had been decommissioned by the middle of the year. They had an output of just 2.5 megawatts. Across Germany, 210 older turbines were decommissioned.

Many new turbines in NRW and Lower Saxony

In a comparison of federal states, Saxony ranks eleventh ahead of Thuringia in terms of the number of new wind turbines. Six new wind turbines went into operation in the neighboring Free State. North Rhine-Westphalia ranks first with 117 new turbines, followed by Lower Saxony with 91 new wind turbines. According to the association, Saarland and the three city states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen saw no growth in the first half of the year.
