Saxony's chemical industry generated a turnover of 3.8 billion euros last year. This corresponds to around 4.5 percent of Saxony's annual turnover in the manufacturing industry, the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Wednesday. This makes the Free State the second largest chemical employer in eastern Germany with around 8,000 employees.

"The chemical industry tends to work behind the scenes, but its products are omnipresent. It is at the beginning of almost all value chains," said Saxony's State Secretary for Economic Affairs Thomas Kralinski on Wednesday at an industry meeting in Burgstädt (district of Central Saxony). He said it was particularly important to him to keep the chemical industry in Europe, Germany and Saxony competitive.

In addition to the two large Wacker sites in Nünchritz and Dow Olefinverbund in Böhlen, the industry in Saxony consists mainly of medium-sized companies. The most important sectors include the production of chemical organic raw materials and the manufacture of plastics in primary forms.
