The state of Saxony is providing around 138 million euros for fiber optic expansion in the districts of Bautzen, Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge and Zwickau. The subsidies will be used to provide 42,900 households in so-called dark gray areas with faster Internet in the three districts, as announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Dark gray areas are areas in which households or addresses are covered but not gigabit-capable. Currently, 66 percent of households in Saxony have a gigabit-capable connection, 32 percent are connected with fiber optics. A gigabit-capable connection enables transmission rates of at least 1000 Mbit per second. Fiber optics make these speeds and more possible.
