In Saxony, energy consumption in 2024 was once again lower than in the previous year. At the same time, the use of lignite continued to decline, while electricity from renewable energy sources increased. This is according to the preliminary energy balance report from the State Statistical Office.
Both total energy consumption and consumption by households, transportation, and industry decreased compared to 2023. According to statisticians, this continued the trend of recent years. A key reason for this is the continued decline in the use of lignite.
In electricity generation, lignite remained by far the most important energy source, accounting for 61 percent. Renewable energies combined accounted for 21 percent and continued to grow, primarily thanks to solar and wind power. Overall, Saxony generated just over one percent less electricity in 2024 than in the previous year.
