Feralpi Stahl in Riesa is investing in green production with a new rolling mill. The industry is calling for political support for the change.

After the "steel summit" in the Chancellery, Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi expects the federal government to act quickly. It is now crucial that the political commitments are quickly followed by concrete measures, explained Uwe Reinecke, Director of Feralpi Stahl in Riesa. Feralpi Stahl is one of the ten largest steel producers in Germany. The plant in Riesa produces construction steel almost exclusively from recycled scrap.

Reinecke described the "steel summit" in the Chancellery on Thursday as an "important step in the right direction". Important topics such as trade protection and competitive energy prices could have been addressed. The company had already called for a capped industrial electricity price and reliable framework conditions for grid fees, among other things.

More than 220 million invested at the Riesa site

"With over 220 million euros invested in our Riesa site, we have made our contribution to the transformation," said Reinecke. In May, the company opened a new electrically powered rolling mill in Riesa, taking a further step towards green steel production.

Saxony, Lower Saxony, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland are among the states with steel industries in Germany. The five states positioned themselves in a joint paper with various demands, such as lower energy prices and effective protective measures for German manufacturers.

The "steel summit" was intended to help support the struggling German steel industry. In addition to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and the minister presidents, representatives of companies and employees also attended the meeting.
