The way has been paved for the construction of a craftsmen's yard in Dresden's Neustadt district. The State Directorate of Saxony (LDS) approved 950,000 euros for the removal of contaminated sites on the former industrial wasteland. The money comes from the EU and the state of Saxony. "The funding will help to dispose of the pollutants in the soil properly," explained LDS President Béla Bélafi. Five halls for craftsmen and tradespeople will later be built on the approximately one-hectare site.
The site was the location of an ammunition factory in 1875. An explosion in 1916 devastated large parts and spread pollutants in the ground. A vehicle repair plant later moved in there. The soil is still contaminated with pollutants such as heavy metals, oil residues and other substances that are hazardous to health. The remediation will now lay the foundation for a new beginning.
