Record losses at Saxony's airports

Saxony's airports recorded the highest loss in their history last year. As the joint holding company of Leipzig and Dresden Airports, Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG (MFAG), confirmed to the German Press Agency, the company made a total loss of 53.5 million euros. The "Leipziger Volkszeitung" (LVZ) and the "Sächsische Zeitung" (SZ) had previously reported this.

According to these reports, sales revenue also fell by 2.9 percent to 186.2 million euros. Consolidated earnings before interest and taxes amounted to minus 39.3 million euros. The past year was "strongly influenced by necessary restructuring expenses", CEO Götz Ahmelmann told LVZ and SZ. The loss had been calculated in this way and was "not an expression of a loss of control". The restructuring course that has been embarked upon will incur additional costs for expert opinions, consultations and initial implementation steps.

Medium German Airports AG owns Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports. The main owners are the two states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. MFAG has been under pressure for years. An acute financial crisis was only narrowly averted last year - thanks to new bank loans and grants from the shareholders. A financing gap of 145 million euros was closed. This secured operations at least until the end of 2026. However, Saxony-Anhalt no longer wants to pay for the loss-making Dresden Airport from 2027 at the latest.
