The brand name suggests almost paradisiacal conditions when it comes to sleep, but the economic reality for Schlaraffia was bleak. Now the lights are going out completely for the workforce.

The insolvent mattress and pillow manufacturer Schlaraffia is being wound up. However, the Schlaraffia brand will remain. The responsible provisional insolvency administrator and the traditional company from Bochum, which is now called Aquinos Bedding Germany GmbH and has also sold box spring beds and slatted frames, announced that no buyer had been found for the production sites. The machinery is outdated and the logistics are technically obsolete. The Bochum mattress plant and the slatted frame production facility in Jöhstadt, Saxony, will therefore be closed.

The brand rights and patents, on the other hand, have been sold to the EuroComfort Group from Bocholt in Münsterland. The new owner wants to "rebuild the Schlaraffia brand in the short term and quickly place it back on the market", according to the press release. "Overall, very good conditions have been created" for the relaunch of the Schlaraffia brand.

171 employees will lose their jobs

As the press release states, the 171 Schlaraffia employees will lose their jobs. However, as a purchase price has been agreed, they will reportedly be paid at least until the end of their notice periods. They can apply for jobs with the new owner. However, as the new owner will not be taking over Schlaraffia production, many employees will probably have to look elsewhere.

Schlaraffia belonged to the Portuguese Equinos Group from 2022. The German subsidiary and its sister companies in Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Romania ran into financial difficulties this year. The sister companies were suppliers to the German subsidiary and had delivery difficulties, causing problems for the German company. High energy costs are cited as one reason for the tense situation. The situation worsened and a visit to the local court was unavoidable. Provisional insolvency proceedings began in July.

The new owner of the Schlaraffia brand rights, the EuroComort Group from Bocholt, reportedly has around 5,000 employees. The company also manufactures mattresses, pillows and comforters, and its brands include Irisette, Brinkhaus and Badenia-Trendline.
