Solar modules on trucks and buses can supply electricity for refrigeration units or air conditioning systems. They are manufactured in Saxony.

A new factory for solar modules has started production in Zwenkau (Leipzig district). From now on, modules for vehicles will be manufactured in the 12,000 square meter hall. This will create 120 jobs, according to the company Opes Solar Mobility. The investment sum was not disclosed on request.

The special modules are particularly resistant to the vibrations and shocks that occur in vehicles. "This means that photovoltaics can be integrated into commercial vehicles worldwide," said Managing Director Robert Händel. Customers are vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to the automotive industry.

Used in buses, trucks and camper vans

The modules are used in buses, trucks and camping vehicles, for example. For example, they could supply electricity for refrigerated trailers on articulated trucks or for air conditioning systems in buses. In principle, they are also suitable for electric vehicles in order to increase their range. However, this is only in the pilot phase.

In a press release, the company referred to data from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. According to this, the potential of solar modules for commercial vehicles in the EU amounts to around 6 million trucks and 30 million vans.
