More space, modern technology and a direct connection to Naumburg: the improvements the new Mireo trains will bring for commuters and passengers from December.

The S-Bahn in Central Germany is getting new and modern vehicles. Deutsche Bahn announced that 34 Mireo trains will be in service from December. The fleet will reportedly offer more space and better connections in the Leipzig/Halle area. Some of the vehicles are equipped with batteries and can therefore also run without overhead lines.

"From December, they will connect Naumburg directly with the Leipzig City Tunnel and thus offer passengers a significantly improved service," said Saxony-Anhalt Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP).

DB Regio is deploying 18 four-car Mireo trains with 200 seats and 16 two-car Mireo Plus B vehicles with 100 seats. Spacious multi-purpose areas are intended to make everyday life easier for passengers with baby carriages, luggage or bicycles, it said.

Preparation in workshops underway

The trains are in operation on lines including the S4 between Torgau and Riesa and the S6 between Leipzig and Naumburg. The battery trains connect Leipzig-Grimma-Döbeln on the S1 without interruption.

The new vehicles are maintained in the DB Regio workshop in Halle. Since the beginning of the year, employees have been able to familiarize themselves with the technology and maintenance of the new vehicles. "Preparations in the workshops are well advanced, our teams have already built up new vehicle skills - and the anticipation is great," said Christine Singer, Chairwoman of the Regional Management DB Regio Südost.
