You have to pass four state exams to be able to work as a driving instructor. Interest in the job is growing in Saxony.

In Saxony, more people passed the four-stage driving instructor exam in 2024 than in the previous year. According to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, 77 applicants successfully passed the test. In 2023, there were 64 applicants.

According to the state office, a long-term trend can be seen. "Every year, more and more applicants are taking the exams to become driving instructors."

Driving schools are looking for staff

This is a good outlook for the industry, as there is generally a shortage of driving instructors. According to the Thuringian Driving Instructors' Association, around half of all driving schools in Germany are looking for staff.

To be able to work as a driving instructor, four state examinations are required: a practical driving test, an oral and written driving test as well as a theoretical and practical teaching test. Across all types, 373 examinations were carried out last year.
