Agriculture Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU) has called for the support of local nurseries at the start of the season. "Plants are part of life and make it beautiful. Therefore: buy regionally, support locally," he said at the opening of the "Blühendes Sachsen" campaign in Freiberg. Every year since 1998, the Central German Horticultural Association has used this campaign to promote the approximately 400 Saxon businesses to consumers when it comes to flower pots and beds.
According to Breitenbuch, the industry stands for regional added value and supports hobby and allotment gardeners as well as balcony owners with products, expertise, tips and tricks on how to make flower beds and balcony boxes bloom sustainably. "The economic situation is still very tense for many gardening businesses at the moment." Above all, the enormous cost increases and the effects of the previous crises are weighing on them.
"We can all support local nurseries by purchasing quality products made here." The Free State will "continue to stand by them despite the current budgetary restrictions", the minister assured. Before this weekend's "Open Nursery Days", the farmer lent a hand himself and tied a bouquet of spring flowers - under the guidance of the reigning German Flower Fairy Anne-Marie Bals.
