The narrow-gauge railroads have their fans - but according to a media report, the timetable for the Weißeritztalbahn and Lößnitzgrundbahn is now to be thinned out. "The funds earmarked by the Free State for the operation of the Weißeritztalbahn and the Lößnitzgrundbahn are to be reduced by ten percent," a spokesperson for the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO) told MDR. For both railroads, the last train pairs of the day will therefore only run during the summer season and on weekends and public holidays. In addition, the breaks in operation planned for construction work are to be extended in November.
The Weißeritztalbahn and the Lößnitzgrundbahn are two historic narrow-gauge railroads in the Dresden region operated by the Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft (SDG). The Weißeritztalbahn runs between Freital-Hainsberg and the spa town of Kipsdorf and went into operation in 1882. It is considered Germany's longest-serving narrow-gauge railroad. The Lößnitzgrundbahn connects Radebeul-Ost and Radeburg and began operating in 1884. Both railroads are considered a tourist attraction, but are also used by locals for local transportation.
