Infineon is opening its new chip factory in Dresden earlier than planned. With this billion-euro investment, the Group intends to meet the growing demand for semiconductors for future technologies.

Semiconductor manufacturer Infineon plans to open its new chip factory in Dresden at the beginning of July. "We are making very good progress with our Smart Power Fab. The team is moving fast. Construction is ahead of schedule. We will open the factory at the beginning of July," said CEO Jochen Hanebeck at the Annual General Meeting in Munich. This specifically means July 2, as confirmed by a company spokesperson. The "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" had previously reported this.

The "Smart Power Fab" is Infineon's response to the increasing demand for semiconductors for renewable energies, data centers and electromobility. According to Hanebeck, the earlier start is intended to meet the growing demand for AI chips. The production ramp-up will take place "flexibly as required".

Billion-euro investment and 1,000 new jobs

Infineon is investing around five billion euros in the expansion of the site - the highest sum in the company's history. Around one billion euros of this comes from subsidies. Around 1,000 additional jobs are to be created in the new factory.

High-ranking political guests are expected to attend the opening, although the company has not yet disclosed any names. At the ground-breaking ceremony in May 2023, the then Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen came to Dresden.
