Timber construction is the trend for detached and semi-detached houses in Saxony. However, the rate for multi-storey buildings is stagnating.

The Greens in the Saxon state parliament want to make it easier to construct buildings from wood. "Timber construction is also a trend in Saxony. The figures show that more and more house builders are opting for this sustainable construction method," explained MP Thomas Löser. Unfortunately, however, we are experiencing stagnation for larger buildings. The main reason for this is high legal requirements.

Greens: Government must simplify options for timber construction

"These have already been made easier with the resolution of the new timber construction model guideline by the Conference of Building Ministers in September 2024, but the implementation of the regulations in the Free State of Saxony is still ongoing," criticized Löser. His party is therefore calling on the state government to follow the examples of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria and immediately simplify timber construction through a ministerial decree. Saxony's first planned timber high-rise building in Leipzig shows the potential of timber construction.

More and more house builders are opting for timber construction

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the proportion of detached and semi-detached houses in timber construction in Saxony has risen steadily in recent years. By 2023, it was already around 22 percent.
As the governing party, the Greens launched an initiative for more timber construction in state properties in the last legislature. This also applies to construction projects under the sovereignty of the state.
