Work on the A4 tunnel has been going on for more than a year and a half, and now the final tests are due. Drivers must be prepared for detour.

The two-day full closure of the A4 Königshainer Berge tunnel begins in the evening for final tests following the extensive renovation work. Traffic will be diverted between the Nieder Seifersdorf and Kodersdorf junctions from 10 p.m., as announced by Autobahn GmbH.

North tunnel open again from Sunday evening

The north tunnel of the approximately 3.3-kilometre-long tunnel should be open again from Sunday evening at 10 p.m. at the latest. As before, traffic will then flow there in both directions.

The south tunnel will initially remain closed until the Federal Highway Authority has evaluated the results of the tests. Autobahn GmbH expects it to open towards the end of next week.

Refurbishment since March 2024

The extensive refurbishment work in the tunnel began in March 2024. During this time, traffic is alternately routed in one lane in both directions through one of the two tunnel tubes while work takes place in the other tunnel tube.

In order to meet the increased safety requirements since completion in 1999 and to bring the tunnel up to the latest state of the art, new emergency call cabins and more sensors for early fire detection have been installed.
