Trade barriers after Brexit? No problem for Saxony's economy. Which industry benefits the most.

Since the UK left the EU five years ago, exports by Saxon companies to the UK have almost doubled. From January to November 2024, they reached a value of almost four billion euros and were thus almost at the previous year's level, according to the State Statistical Office.

The most important driver of export growth: the automotive industry. In 2024, cars and motorhomes accounted for more than two thirds of Saxony's exports to the UK. Chassis, bodies, engines and accessories accounted for ten percent. This means that the UK remains one of the three most important foreign markets for Saxony's vehicle industry - alongside China and the USA.

Imports did not slump either - on the contrary: at 698 million euros, the value of goods from the UK in November already exceeded that of the whole of 2023 (643 million euros). The most important goods were vehicle parts worth almost 200 million euros, 68 percent more than in the previous year, and aircraft with 117 million euros, an increase of nine percent.
