Around a third less electricity was generated from lignite in Saxony in 2023. Wind and solar power generation in particular have increased. Consumption has also fallen - especially in industry.

Gross electricity generation in Saxony fell by almost a quarter in 2023. This is according to the energy balance published by the State Statistical Office on Thursday. According to the report, electricity generation fell to 34 terawatt hours. Electricity generation from lignite accounted for the largest share of the decline, falling by eleven terawatt hours. This corresponds to a third, according to the State Statistical Office.

Energy consumption in Saxony down - especially in industry

Renewable energies increased in the same period - especially generation from wind power and photovoltaics. Here, electricity production increased by five terawatt hours. This corresponds to an increase of nine percent.

Overall, energy consumption in Saxony fell. Accordingly, a total of 566 petajoules of electricity, gas, coal and mineral oil were consumed in 2023. This corresponds to a decrease of 13 percent. Lignite also accounted for the largest share here - consumption fell by almost a third.
