Good news for passengers in Dresden: they will still be able to fly to the Bavarian capital in the future.

The connection from Dresden Airport to Munich will be maintained in the coming years. Lufthansa has reached an agreement to this effect with Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the airport company. The "Sächsische Zeitung" and "Leipziger Volkszeitung" had initially reported.

"This is an important signal for the region and the result of constructive cooperation between the Lufthansa Group, the Saxon state government and Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG," CEO Götz Ahmelmann told the newspapers. At the end of October, he had warned that the route would be canceled. Due to high location costs in Germany, it was being put to the test, Ahmelmann said at the time.

Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports under pressure

Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports belong to Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. The main owners are the two states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The airport company has been under pressure for years. Last year, it recorded the highest loss in its history at 53.5 million euros. Revenues fell by 2.9 percent to 186.2 million euros.

Several connections had already been canceled at the two airports. Lufthansa scrapped the route from Leipzig to Munich with the 2025 summer timetable. The Group subsidiary Eurowings removed the Leipzig-Düsseldorf route from its program at the end of last year.
