Nine projects in the semiconductor industry receive financial injection of 1.8 billion euros to promote technological leadership in Europe

Financial injection for innovative projects in Saxony's chip industry: Nine Saxon projects in the semiconductor industry are in the starting blocks and are intended to provide a technological edge for the European microelectronics industry, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced. According to the information, the total project volume for the projects is just under 1.8 billion euros, with 795 million euros coming from the federal and state governments as part of a joint European project (IPCEI) on microelectronics.

"With the support of the federal and state governments, ground-breaking innovations for autonomous driving, intelligent medical technology, energy-efficient control electronics and artificial intelligence will be developed in and around Dresden in the coming years," said Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig (SPD).

According to the ministry, the largest sub-project, "Eurofoundry", entered the implementation phase with a working meeting at chip manufacturer Globalfoundries in the north of Dresden on Thursday. Globalfoundries wants to offer customized chips for industry, autonomous driving and medical technology more quickly in the future. In addition to Infineon and Bosch, Freiberg-based Compound Materials, Siltectra, Ferroelectric Memory and NXP Semiconductors are also involved in the projects. These include the production of high-performance radar sensors, new materials and memory chip concepts.

The IPCEI funding program was approved by the EU Commission in spring 2023 and distributes grants of up to 8.1 billion euros to projects focusing on microelectronics and communication technology from 14 EU countries, including Germany.
