Despite all efforts for a traffic turnaround, more and more cars are on the road in Saxony. From 2012 to 2022, the number of registered cars per 1000 inhabitants increased by more than five percent, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. Accordingly, the value in Saxony in 2012 was 513, in 2022 540.

Nationwide, there were 583 registered cars per 1000 inhabitants last year - a record. On the cut-off date of January 1, 2023, 48.8 million passenger cars were registered in Germany, according to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, more than ever before. More than three quarters of all private households owned at least one car, according to calculations.

In the past ten years, the car density has risen consistently, the Federal Office informed - the only exception: Berlin. While 342 cars per 1,000 inhabitants were counted in the federal capital in 2012, the figure was 338 last year.
