13 new turbines: Saxony remains a latecomer in wind power

In Saxony, 13 new wind turbines were connected to the grid last year. In a year in which the nationwide expansion of wind power reached almost record levels, the Free State remains among the laggards in terms of expansion, according to the German Wind Energy Association. Only in Saarland were fewer wind turbines built. Saxony contributed a good 64.8 megawatts and thus 1.2 percent of the newly installed capacity nationwide. According to the figures, the frontrunners are North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

In Germany as a whole, 958 new systems were installed last year, with 5,232 megawatts of additional capacity being connected to the grid. This corresponds to an increase of 58 percent compared to the previous year and is the second-highest figure to date.

The wind farm in Saxony is also the oldest in Germany with an average age of 20.8 years. Seven turbines were decommissioned last year. In total, there were 858 wind turbines in Saxony at the end of last year. This corresponds to 2.1 percent of the 29,226 turbines nationwide.
