The 150-year-old Palm House in Pillnitz Palace Park has been given a new energy screen. This is a protective textile layer that is extended under the glass surfaces, as announced by Schlösserland Sachsen. It is intended to reduce heat radiation and thus cut energy costs.
Up to 30 percent less energy consumption
The Palm House is home to exotic plants from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, which require a minimum temperature of 18 degrees even in winter. The energy costs in the single-glazed plant protection house were high - in 2024 they amounted to 95,000 euros. The new energy screen is intended to reduce consumption by 20 to 30 percent while preserving the listed cast steel and glass construction.
1,000 square meters of special fabric
In the past seven months, the 16-year-old predecessor was replaced with new energy and roller screens as well as additional thermal insulation on the walls. More than 1,000 square meters of a well-insulating, fireproof plastic fabric were used. The modernization cost 148,800 euros.
