Anyone researching historical figures often has to search multiple archives at the same time. Especially when it comes to pastors, information is frequently scattered across printed books or individual databases. A new meta-search tool from HTWK Leipzig aims to change that.
In the “Meta-Pfarrerbuch” project, experts from archives and academia are collaborating. The goal is to create a shared metadata database. Rather than storing the information itself, it links the databases of the individual archives together. This way, the data remains with the respective institutions but can still be searched collectively.
Expansion continues
First, the team examined how the data is structured in the various archives. The participants then defined common characteristics that will allow the different datasets to be linked in the future. In addition, a standardized vocabulary is being developed for information such as family relationships, positions held, or educational backgrounds.
At a recent workshop at HTWK Leipzig, representatives from church archives tested the initial functions of the Meta-Pfarrerbuch and discussed the next steps in its development. In the future, additional datasets will be integrated, and the platform will be continuously expanded.
