The large permanent exhibition at Königstein Fortress in Saxon Switzerland will be extensively cleaned in January and will therefore be temporarily closed. From January 7 to 30 inclusive, the exhibition "In lapide regis - On the King's Stone" will not be accessible, as the fortress announced.
For visitors, the excursion could still be worthwhile: During the revision, the reduced admission price of ten euros applies to all adults, while children and young people up to the age of 16 are admitted free of charge. The extensive permanent exhibition with around 500 exhibits is overhauled once a year, including the maintenance of display cases, floors, air conditioning and media technology.
Special exhibition and photo campaign
According to the fortress, the closure only affects the main exhibition. The Georgenburg with virtual tour, the fountain house and the treasure house are still open. In addition, the special exhibition "Along the Elbe - old Saxony in paintings from the Wolfgang Donath Collection" can be seen daily. Guided tours are offered on Saturdays, and on January 18, the otherwise closed garrison church will also open for a photo campaign.
The medieval Bohemian royal castle, first mentioned in a document in 1241, later became a monastery, then a state fortress, a courtly festival site, an art depot and also a prison. Since 1955, the 9.5-hectare fortress area has been an open-air museum with over 50 buildings from different eras and half a million visitors from home and abroad every year.
