As in art, craftsmanship requires creativity, knowledge of materials and tools. The stories about this vary widely - as an exhibition shows.

Herrnhuter Sterne, designer dirndls, old tea bowls - an exhibition at the Dresden Museum of Decorative Arts is dedicated to the "Myth of Craftsmanship. Between the ideal and everyday life". It is about materials and tools, but also about assumptions and attributions "that go beyond the unambiguous nature of the activity, the profession or an industry", according to the announcement by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (SKD). Depending on the point of view, craft is considered traditional, authentic, regional, physical or individual. The show also sees itself as a forum for the examination of Saxon and supra-regional craftsmanship from the past to the future.

In the Japanisches Palais, more than 150 objects, pictures, infographics and installations will reflect the relationship between local and global production, hobby and mastery, individual pieces and series, headwork and manual work, luxury and necessity, progress and tradition from different perspectives until mid-December.

Highlights include the Herrnhut stars patented 100 years ago, a designer dirndl that combines African and Bavarian influences and tea bowls repaired using the Kintsugi technique. In a workshop and the Fair Fashion Factory, the public can lend a hand and also talk to and about the craft industry as a partner of the exhibition.
