Conductor Herbert Blomstedt (99) has canceled three concerts scheduled for September at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig for health reasons. “Herbert Blomstedt has had a special connection to the Gewandhaus Orchestra for many decades, which is why we deeply regret this cancellation. We wish our honorary conductor a speedy recovery from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to seeing him again at the Gewandhaus,” the orchestra announced.
Blomstedt served as music director of the Gewandhaus from 1998 to 2005. He plans to celebrate his 100th birthday on July 11, 2027, with his former orchestra at the Gewandhaus. He also maintains a close relationship with the Staatskapelle Dresden, where he served as chief conductor from 1975 to 1985.
Marek Janowski will take the podium for the three concerts in Leipzig on September 17, 18, and 20. The program, featuring Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, remains unchanged.
