Five Leipzig theaters want to track down and compare current trends and political positions. In autumn 2025, the trade fair city will host the "Politics in Independent Theater" festival for the first time.

Leipzig will become the stage for the "Politics in Independent Theater" festival in autumn 2025. From 16 to 25 October, up to 15 independent theater productions from Germany and Europe will be presented at five venues in the trade fair city, as the organizers announced on Thursday. 80 years after the end of the Second World War, 35 years after German reunification and due to current political events, the Leipzig edition of the festival will explore the topic of "borders".

The aim is to explore the boundaries between cultural identities, social classifications, political camps, social contradictions, states, city and country as well as between artistic disciplines.

The thematic focus offers excellent starting points for developing a coherent theater and event program together with the theaters and other cooperation partners in politics, culture and education, announced Thomas Krüger from the Federal Agency for Civic Education on Thursday.

The festival was organized by the Federal Agency for Civic Education for the first time in 1988 and has since been held every three years at different locations in Germany.
