The tree for this year's Christmas market in Leipzig will once again come from the Vogtland region. A 21-metre-high spruce from the Schöneck district of Kottenheide was chosen, the city announced. The owner had offered the tree, which is around 60 years old and weighs 4.5 tons, himself, as it would have had to be felled soon anyway due to damage to the roots for safety and age reasons.
The tree is to be erected on 3 November and decorated with 300 red and gold baubles and around 3,000 lights. The Leipzig Christmas market is scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 23. However, the Christmas tree is to remain in place until January 5.
