Design enthusiasts from all over the world can now take a look at the extensive work of Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) via a new online platform. More than 1,600 of his designs for bangles, teapots, furniture and more are included in the digital catalog raisonné, as announced by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
High-resolution photos and additional information on the objects themselves, but also on van de Velde and his many clients as well as other people in his circle can be found there. The directory is set to grow: around 700 further entries on furniture are to be added by 2027.
Significant influence on design history
The Belgian architect and designer van de Velde had a major influence on the design of everyday objects of his time. He founded the School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, from which the State Bauhaus later emerged. Sites of the famous art and design school are now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
The Hohe Pappeln house, which he once lived in and designed, is located in Weimar, while Chemnitz is also home to another famous van de Velde building, the Villa Esche. Both houses are considered masterpieces of Art Nouveau. The Hohe Pappeln House is currently being renovated.
