Almost 81 years after their destruction, the Proposition Hall and the Grand Ballroom in Dresden's Royal Palace have been restored. The official handover of the keys following the reconstruction of the two ballrooms in the north wing will take place next Friday, as announced by the Ministry of Finance.
The restoration of the two halls began in January 2023 under the direction of the Dresden I branch of the Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB). Numerous experts from the fields of heritage conservation, architecture, science and crafts were involved. The redesign of the rooms between 1838 and 1854 served as a model, which is well documented by extensive archive and construction documents as well as preserved parts of the building and exhibition.
Visit possible from spring
With the handover to the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD), the tour on the second floor of the Residenzschloss is complete. From spring, visitors will be able to view the exhibition "Masks and Crowns. Festive Culture and the Representation of Power at the Dresden Court". The Proposition Hall was the venue for the formal state ceremony where princes could present their demands or proposals (proposition) to the assembled estates at the opening of the Diet.
The Dresden residence of Saxon electors and kings from the 16th century, which was destroyed in 1945, has been restored since 1986. Since then, the Green Vault, Kupferstich- und Münzkabinett, Türckische Cammer, Riesensaal and the parade chambers as well as the first permanent exhibitions of the armory have been set up there. The work is due to be fully completed in 2027.
