Moritzburg Festival: Chamber Music with the Cackling of Geese

Patron raves about the festival’s unique concept

At the start, Alexander Dierks, President of the Saxon State Parliament and patron of the music festival, took the floor. He praised the pioneering spirit, optimism, and self-confidence of the festival’s founders, led by current Artistic Director Jan Vogler. In retrospect, success always seems terribly obvious; one no longer even sees the effort that went into establishing such a format. Bringing together world-class soloists with up-and-coming young musicians is a unique concept. Excellence in the future will only be possible if today’s excellence gives the next generation a chance. 

Jan Vogler—an internationally acclaimed cellist—launched the festival in 1993 with his brother Kai and fellow cellist Peter Bruns. Before long, the idyllic location just outside Dresden became a magnet for chamber musicians from all over the world. The founders had drawn inspiration from the Marlboro Festival in the U.S. There, too, participants present the results of their work in concerts following a rehearsal period.
