For the Capital of Culture year, numerous buildings and squares in Chemnitz have been spruced up at a cost of millions. But there have also been setbacks.

During the Capital of Culture year, almost 58 million euros flowed into urban development projects in Chemnitz. Around 30 projects of various sizes have benefited: from the market fountain and the Hartmann Factory as a visitor center to the restoration of the childhood home of painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, in which a new museum has been set up.

The last two projects will now be inaugurated at the weekend - the park under the railroad viaduct and the extension to a youth club in the Einsiedel district, according to the city administration. To mark the occasion, there will be various activities at numerous locations under the title "Fertsch": from guided tours and exhibitions to games, sports and music.

Theatres are a problem child

However, not all projects were successfully implemented. For example, the Schauspielhaus was supposed to be renovated as part of the project. However, the project has been put on hold due to an enormous increase in costs. A new location for the theater stage is now even being discussed.
