With the major Munch exhibition, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz have presented a highlight in the Capital of Culture program. Now the museum is turning its attention to an internationally acclaimed artist from the region.

Carlfriedrich Claus (1930-1998) is internationally recognized as a sound poet and co-founder of visual poetry. To mark the end of the Capital of Culture year, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz are now focusing on the phonetic work of the avant-garde artist in a new exhibition. The show "Am Rand des Jetzt am Rand des Hier" can be seen at the Haus am Theaterplatz until March 1.

The exhibition focuses on Claus' sound process room, which was first shown in the art collections in 1995, according to the museum. It has been reconstructed for this 30th anniversary. Visitors can control the sound environment themselves by moving around. The installation is complemented by drawings, portfolios, documents and books, which are intended to provide a comprehensive insight into the artist from Annaberg-Buchholz's world of thought and work.

Chemnitz archive looks after the estate of Carlfriedrich Claus

As an artist, Claus was self-taught and was involved with art and languages from an early age. He became a pioneer of visual and acoustic poetry. Little noticed by the official GDR art scene, his work found international acclaim - for example in exhibitions in Baden-Baden, Paris and The Hague. He also received several awards. In an archive named after him, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz are looking after his estate: around 850 prints, 575 hand drawings, many sound recordings and manuscripts, more than 22,000 letters and his library.
