Organist Johannes Lang will play the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig's St. Thomas Church one after the other - for 22 hours. The Bach marathon is scheduled to begin this Friday at 1.30 pm and run until Saturday morning, according to the church congregation. The St. Thomas organist will play 235 works in 14 concerts, each lasting 90 minutes.
Lang (36) said that the Bach Marathon was a long-cherished dream come true for him. A very long period of preparation was necessary for the realization. He wanted to "awaken enthusiasm for the incredible variety of Bach's organ works." The audience is free to choose whether to attend individual concerts, sections or the entire series. The corresponding tickets are called "short distance", "half marathon" and "marathon".
The Bach organ will be played by Gerald Woehl. More than 60 finely graduated timbres would still provide enjoyment for both the listener and the player even after many hours.
A 90-minute concert documentary is also being produced, which will be shown on ARTE and later in the ARD Mediathek and on MDR.
