From the summer semester onwards, students should actually receive a discounted Deutschlandticket. However, this is not the case everywhere in Saxony.

A discounted Deutschlandticket is available for the majority of students in Saxony for the summer semester. In Leipzig, the so-called Deutschland-Semesterticket is compulsory at all seven universities, as announced by the Studierendenwerk Leipzig. It costs 176.40 euros for the whole semester or 29.40 euros per month. The situation is similar in Dresden, where, according to Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe, students from a total of eleven universities receive the ticket.

There is also a similar agreement for the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, and one is currently being drawn up for Chemnitz University of Technology, according to Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen. According to the report, there is currently no agreement for the TU Freiberg and the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences due to a lack of interest from the student body. The discounted Deutschlandticket will be offered at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences from the 2024/2025 winter semester. For students at the Berufsakademie Sachsen, different regulations apply depending on the location; in Leipzig, for example, the offer is available.

In the past, it was possible to upgrade the semester ticket to the Deutschlandticket in many places. The price then amounted to a total of 49 euros per month, in Dresden, for example, 32.40 euros for the semester ticket plus 16.60 euros for the upgrade, in Chemnitz a surcharge of 17.12 euros was due. Students at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences can also take advantage of this option (€24.88 extra).

In November, the federal and state governments agreed to introduce the Deutschlandticket for students for €29.40 per month. As with the regular semester tickets, the student committees of the universities must negotiate the necessary contracts with the transport companies themselves.
