Financial experts continue to regard Saxony as a particularly reliable debtor. An international rating agency confirms the top rating - but also specifies a condition.

Financial experts continue to regard Saxony as a particularly reliable debtor. The rating agency Standard & Poor's once again confirmed the top rating of "AAA" for the Free State. This means that the state can continue to borrow money on the capital market at comparatively favorable conditions. The analysts now rate the outlook as "stable", according to the Saxon Ministry of Finance.

Last year, Standard & Poor's also awarded the highest rating, but still had a negative outlook. This was due to structural deficits in the state budget. At the time, the very good credit rating was still linked to the warning and expectation that the existing structural budget deficits should be tackled decisively.

Budget remains crucial

In their current report, the analysts particularly praise the government's efforts to make savings and overcome the structural budget deficit in the planned 2027/2028 double budget, according to the ministry. However, if a balanced budget is not achieved, the credit rating could be downgraded in future.

The experts also rate Saxony's low level of debt in comparison to other federal states positively. The so-called generation fund, which is intended to cushion rising pension and benefit expenses for civil servants, is also highlighted.

Federal funds from the special fund for infrastructure and climate protection are seen as another stabilizing factor. According to the report, analysts also see it as positive that the minority government is seeking cooperation with the opposition on budget issues.
