Woodturners in the Ore Mountains often use well-known figures as models for their creations. Now, two comic book heroes are making a splash as incense-burning figurines. Here’s how it came about.

As comic book heroes, the characters “Father and Son” have captivated a wide audience for decades; now they are being reborn as incense-burning figurines. The occasion is Saxony Day, which will be celebrated in Plauen in 2027. The city in the Vogtland region was once home to their creator, Erich Ohser (1903–1944), also known as e.o.plauen. This special edition builds a bridge between Saxony’s largest community festival and the traditional woodcraft of the Ore Mountains.

The figures are being crafted by the Kuhnert Woodturning Workshop in Rothenkirchen (Vogtland District). The development process took about half a year, says Managing Director Frank Kuhnert. According to reports, both figures feature a detail that alludes to Saxony Day. The son holds a balloon in his hand, while the mustachioed father holds a small flag bearing the festival’s logo.

Saxony Day Returns to Plauen After 30 Years

The city announced that the pair of figurines will be available only this year. An initial run of 200 pieces was produced. The pair will be available starting November 9 for 69.50 euros at the Plauen Tourist Information Office, the Vogtland Museum, and the Fabrik der Fäden.

Saxony Day will be celebrated next year in conjunction with the Plauen Lace Festival from June 18 to 20. The theme is “Celebrating LACE Together.” This marks the return of the major festival to the Vogtland city after 30 years; it previously hosted the event in 1997.
