For nine days, nothing will work on the tracks between Bad Schandau and Schöna - at least during the day. Even after that, rail travelers will face repeated closures before the Czech border.

Those who currently want to travel from Dresden to Prague by train will have to plan for alternative services and longer journey times. Due to construction work between Bad Schandau and Schöna, the line will be completely closed until next Sunday (March 22) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as announced by Deutsche Bahn. After that, there will be a total closure every Monday from 9 am to 7 pm until November 2027.

Trains on the long-distance Berlin-Dresden-Prague line will then only run between Berlin and Dresden and Decin and Prague. Replacement buses will run between Dresden and Usti nad Labem. The stop in Bad Schandau will be canceled. Regional services will also be affected: there will be replacement services on the S1 and U28 lines between Bad Schandau and Schmilka or Decin. Deutsche Bahn recommends using the digital information media to find out about connections before starting your journey.

Further closures in April and from June

Further closures have already been announced. From April 14 to 19, the route will again be closed daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Night closures will be added from April 13 to 29. The railroad will provide information about further restrictions from June onwards.

Construction work has also been underway on the nearby section between Heidenau and Rathen since February. Trains will continue to run there until 11 April in so-called track-change operation, and the line will be partially closed at night.

Work for more reliability

The focus of the construction work is the renovation of the Hirschmühlen viaduct directly on the border. Parts of the bridge structure are being replaced there. The railroad is also laying new cables and completing work at the Bad Schandau Ost freight station to improve operations.

According to the company, the measures are intended to make the busy international connection more reliable in the long term. The line has been undergoing extensive modernization since 2014. According to Deutsche Bahn, it is the only electrified border crossing from Germany to the Czech Republic in the rail network.
