The bridges in Bad Schandau have been an ongoing issue for almost a year and a half. The ground is now being examined in preparation for construction work.

The subsoil for the new bridges over the Elbe and the railroad tracks in Bad Schandau will be examined again in the coming weeks. From Monday, there will therefore be brief interruptions to train services in order to bring an excavator to its work sites in the area of the tracks, according to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport.

Drilling will be carried out on the B172 from Königstein from April 20. A temporary full closure has been announced for this, but the exact time has not yet been determined. The final drilling on the other side of the Elbe will follow from 18 May, for which a half-sided traffic route will be set up on the B172.

18 drillings for geodata

The investigations are intended to provide the geotechnical data for the designs, the structural calculations and the subsequent construction work. Completion is planned for the end of May. Drilling will be carried out at a total of 18 points 10 to 20 meters deep to explore the layered structure in the ground. The experts will also test the load-bearing capacity using so-called dynamic probing. This is necessary because sheet pile walls are to be used in the new bridge construction to prevent the soil from sliding back into the ground. Initial subsoil investigations were already carried out last year.

Damage to both bridges

Damage was discovered on both bridges along the B172 in Bad Schandau during a special inspection following the collapse of Dresden's Carola Bridge. As a result, the Elbe bridge was unexpectedly closed at the end of 2024, causing traffic chaos in the region for months. After more detailed investigations, the bridge was reopened to traffic. However, there is a weight restriction, which was recently raised to 30 tons. It has not yet been decided whether the damage will be repaired or a new bridge will be built.

This issue has already been resolved for the adjacent bridge over the tracks. It has to be demolished and planning for a new bridge is underway. Construction work on a temporary bridge will begin in the summer and should be completed in early 2027.
