How safe is the landfill in Olbernhau? The state directorate is now granting the operator a lot of money to put the landfill to the test.

The former domestic waste landfill site in Olbernhau is to be remediated and further secured. The State Directorate of Saxony has approved 639,000 euros for construction work at the former landfill site for the Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Südwestsachsen. "We want to make a safe landfill site even safer," said Béla Bélafi, head of the authority, describing the project. The funds are also earmarked for the renovation of the landfill degassing system. The entire project is expected to cost one million euros.

Household waste, building rubble and excavated earth were deposited at the Olbernhau landfill until mid-1996. It was then closed. From 1997 to 1999, work was carried out to cover the landfill.
