At the Bavarian Football Association's conference, a nationwide controversial topic is also addressed - the regional league reform. The DFB President calls for a "solution-oriented" debate.

The Bavarian Football Association rejects a hasty compromise solution in the controversial debate about a regional league reform. This was confirmed by President Christoph Kern at the BFV's association conference in Bad Gögging. "We are looking for the best possible solution - and not a quick-fix solution," said the 43-year-old Kern.

To date, there are five regional leagues in Germany, but only four promoted to the 3rd division. In the future, however, all champions should be promoted. "Everyone sees the need for reform in the regional league. Yes, champions must be promoted," said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf in his guest speech.

Neuendorf: No mental exercise

In Bad Gögging, the 64-year-old called on all those involved to work together in a "solution-oriented" manner. "The regional league debate is not just a mental exercise," said the head of the soccer governing body.

Kern paid Neuendorf "respect" for actively getting involved as head of the DFB and entering "this mined area". The BFV president emphasized that Bayern "will not allow itself to be pushed into a decision quickly from the outside" that "we will regret later". With 1.8 million members and 4,500 clubs, the BFV is the largest regional association in the DFB. There are also "different perspectives" among the BFV clubs, said Kern.

Compass or regional model?

A working group on regional league reform had unanimously voted in favor of a four-track fourth division at the end of March. There is a compass model and a region model. In the compass solution, the four divisions would be formed each season from all regional league teams based on distance.

In the region model, two leagues would be formed from the North, North-East and Bavarian regional leagues. The West and Southwest regional leagues, on the other hand, would continue as before.

The Bavarian representatives recently introduced another model into the discussion. The five leagues would continue to be split after a preliminary round. The top clubs would each play a champion/promoted team in four leagues. The teams in the bottom half of the table would remain in their regional structures and compete in relegation rounds in their five leagues.
