Dynamo Dresden will probably reach the DFB Cup via the league. But even without the pressure, the favorites had an unexpectedly difficult time in the state cup in Plauen.

Dynamo Dresden narrowly avoided embarrassment in the Saxony Cup. The third-division soccer club only prevailed in the quarter-finals on Sunday at VFC Plauen, who play two leagues lower, in a penalty shoot-out 6:5 (1:1, 0:0). Jakob Lemmer converted the redeeming penalty after Plauen's Charlie Spranger had previously missed.

The regular season had ended goalless. Johann Martynets (98') put the underdogs ahead, but Dresden captain Stefan Kutschke (115') equalized.

"It's a game where a lot can always happen. We didn't have any penetration, didn't create many chances," Dresden coach Markus Anfang told MDR. Dresden will face FSV Zwickau in the semi-finals. The regional league club beat Fortuna Chemnitz 4:1 on Sunday.

In the second semi-final, Bischofswerdaer FV will host FC Erzgebirge Aue. The Oberliga club eliminated defending champions 1. FC Lok Leipzig on Saturday with a 3-2 win after extra time. Aue struggled for a long time against SC Freital, who also play in the Oberliga, but won 2-0 on Saturday thanks to two late goals.

The exact dates for the semi-finals will be decided in the coming days. Three dates in April are up for discussion. Due to the match schedules, the matches have to take place during the week. In the final on May 25, Dynamo would have the right to play at home should Dresden meet Aue. Otherwise, a lower-ranked team would be allowed to play the match in their own stadium.
