Defending champions SC Magdeburg have qualified for the Final Four of the Champions League in Cologne for the fourth time in a row. In the quarter-final second leg against Hungary's runners-up Pick Szeged, the team from the city on the Elbe won 45:37 (23:19) in the Getec Arena, which was sold out with 6,437 spectators. The aggregate score was 80:65. Magdeburg's best scorer was Omar Ingi Magnusson with eight goals.
Magdeburg had won the first leg by a seven-goal margin and SCM also took a quick lead in the second leg (5:2/6). The visitors tried their hand at offensive cover, but SCM exploited the gaps. Roland Mikler and Tobias Thulin in goal saved a number of shots, but that did not change the course of the game - Szeged was not able to reduce the deficit. Instead, the Hungarians brought toughness into the game - Mario Sostaric was shown the red card after a punch (30'). Magdeburg led by eleven goals at the break.
The visitors reduced the deficit to two goals after the break when SCM appeared defensively unfocused. Things went better in offense and Magdeburg kept its lead at three goals (28:25/36). The game lacked structure at times, but the club from the city on the Elbe was not bothered by this and pulled five goals ahead again. It was now clear at the latest that SCM would travel to the Final Four in Cologne again.
