Six-time Olympic luge champion Natalie Geisenberger was officially bid farewell on Sunday on the sidelines of the World Championships in Altenberg. Her teammates donned Geisenberger masks for the ceremony. A film showing the highlights of her sporting career had been shown beforehand. "The movie was incredibly emotional. It was nice to see so many old pictures, even if they almost made me a little uncomfortable," said the 35-year-old. It was nice "to say goodbye in front of such a backdrop". She announced the end of her career in September 2023.
At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Natalie Geisenberger won her third consecutive Olympic individual gold medal and gold with the team relay. She thus overtook Claudia Pechstein as the most successful German Winter Olympian. The Bavarian has won a total of nine World Championship titles and the overall World Cup eight times.
