The criticized coach of Red Star Belgrade, Barak Bakhar, sees the infamous atmosphere in the Rajko Mitic stadium as a decisive factor in the Champions League against RB Leipzig. "On paper, Leipzig may be the favorites, but anything can happen in our stadium and with these fans," said Bakhar on Monday. With a win on Tuesday evening (21:00/DAZN), Leipzig could secure an early place in the round of 16.
The 13-time Serbian champions will not only be looking to counter the atmosphere created by over 50,000 fans in Belgrade's so-called Marakana. Bakhar will probably also move away tactically from his usual possession soccer in the league and rely on a wall tactic. "We've seen that Leipzig have difficulties when their opponents are compact at the back. We conceded the goal too early in the first leg," said the 44-year-old. Bakhar alluded to Leipzig's most recent defeat at Mainz 05, when the Saxons allowed themselves to be outplayed and failed to create any chances themselves.
A success would also be important for Bakhar's future. The Israeli is not without controversy, as Red Star are second in the championship, well behind local rivals Partizan Belgrade. After a draw against Backa Topola last Wednesday, some fans confronted the coach and team in the dressing room. Before last Saturday's home win against bottom side Surdulica, the supporters wrote a letter and gave a copy to each player and the coach.
