Life expectancy in Saxony is once again above pre-pandemic levels. Among women, it ranks second nationwide—but not among men. What accounts for this difference?

Life expectancy in Saxony has risen slightly. According to data from the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), a girl born in 2025 can expect to live an average of 84.3 years, while a boy can expect to live 78.6 years. Compared to 2019, life expectancy for boys rose by 0.5 years and for girls by 0.2 years. This means that life expectancy in Saxony has returned to pre-COVID-19 levels for the first time.

Compared to the other federal states, life expectancy for women in Saxony ranks second alongside Bavaria, behind Baden-Württemberg (84.6). Men in the Free State, on the other hand, rank in the middle of the pack.

Scientists at the BiB see tobacco use as one possible explanation for the differing trends among men and women. “Tobacco use among men began to decline several decades ago, so the negative consequences are already on the decline,” explained Pavel Grigoriev, head of the Mortality Research Group at the BiB. Among women, smoking did not become widespread until around 1970, which is why the associated negative consequences are still on the rise.
