Schools in Saxony are reporting fewer canceled classes—the decline is particularly noticeable in high schools. Here’s what the Minister of Education has to say about it.

The number of canceled classes in Saxony declined again during the past school year. According to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, 3.1 percent of scheduled class periods were canceled in schools. That was a decrease of just over 11 percent compared to the 2024–2025 school year.

Decline Particularly Pronounced at High Schools

The decline was particularly pronounced at high schools, with a cancellation rate of 5.6 percent—2 percentage points lower than the previous school year. There were slight improvements at special education schools (from 7.9 percent to 7.6 percent) and high schools (from 1.5 percent to 1.4 percent). The situation was different at elementary schools, where more classes were canceled (from 0.8 percent to 1.3 percent), and at vocational training centers (from 1.4 percent to 1.8 percent).

Unscheduled class cancellations—due to illness, professional development, or school events, for example—remained at the previous year’s level (from 5.7 percent to 5.8 percent).

Clemens: An Important Signal

According to Minister of Education Conrad Clemens, the fact that more teachers were hired than left the profession during the past school year contributed to the decline. “This trend is an important signal for all students, teachers, and parents. Even though there is still work ahead of us, we are on the right track,” said the CDU politician, according to a press release.
